What's going on??
Most Important: All animals are still pasture raised and grass finished with no hormones or antibiotics! They are still the same high quality, happy California cows you've been getting!
Background: Deer Creek Watershed Conservancy (DCWC, to save a lot of space on the page) is a local landowner group that prides itself on practical, sustainable management of the Deer Creek Watershed. They're also dedicated supporting the rural communities within that watershed. And within those communities are the ranchers and neighbors that have shaped the management of Striking A Livestock. Check out the DCWC webpage for more info on the organization. It might look familiar but slightly more formal......
In a Nutshell: Striking A Livestock (SAL, since we're into acronyms these days) and DCWC are partnering to bring you more beef! Producers from within the watershed, including SAL, will sell finished critters to DCWC, who will then take care of the marketing and delivering end of things. Don't worry, the animals enrolled will still meet the same strict criteria that you are used to, and the ordering policies will remain the same. And we are working really hard to make sure you see a negligible, if any price increase. Our goal is still to bring you healthy, delicious beef at reasonable prices.
Why Is This A Good Idea??: Because it does two really important things. First, it makes sustainable, niche marketting available to producers who, while they have the production end dialed in, do not have the time or resources to bring the fruits of that production to customers. Second, it makes more beef available at more times to you, the customer, without sacrificing quality or complicating ordering. As usual, its a work in progress, and your thoughts and input are welcomed and will be taken to heart. Both entities will be working very closely together to make sure the transition as seamless as possible.
Things you should know about our cows:
Our cows live in cow paradise. Mild California winters and irrigated
summer pastures mean that they graze on fresh grass year round. No
snow drifts or truckloads of hay for these girls, thank you. They don't
do drugs, either -- we don't give hormones or antibiotics to Striking A
Livestock beef. We do provide
salt and mineral supplements, and extra protein if the winter is hard (plant based protein -- no animal by-products) and we will happily supply you with a
"list of ingredients" if you are interested. We are certified through American Grassfed Association and maintain or exceed their standards.
A grass based diet makes healthy cows, which in turn make healthy beef. Grass fed beef is lower in fat and
higher in omega-3 oils and vitamin E than its grain fed counterpart.
Our cows
aren't only health conscious, they watch their carbon hoof prints and
well. Because their food is not harvested or hauled, they are able to
keep their fossil fuel use very low. They also keep their commuting to
a minimum -- instead of gallivanting across the continent from producer
to feedlot to processor, they stay on the ranch right up to the short
trip to the abattoir.
We offer beef once a year in the late spring to coincide with the growing season of the native grasses that we finish our animals on. Because this is an annual event, we offer packages of freezer beef that will keep throughout the year without compromising quality.
Keeping cattle on pasture not only benefits the animal and the
consumer, but the environment as well. To learn more, take a look at these resources:
